Bloodstone is a green jasper with spots or patches of bright red hematite. Bloodstone is often referred to as heliotrope, which is Greek for “sun turning,” as people once believed that the sun turned red when this stone was placed in the rays of the setting sun or when immersed in water. A legend dating back to the Middle Ages claims that bloodstone was formed at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, when the blood of his wounds fell onto the dark green earth and turned to stone.

While the primary source of the stone is India, it is also found in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Australia, and the United States, as well as the Isle of Rum in Scotland.
